Info on Edwin Bardach, with references

From a technology perspective, geneology is fascinating. So many indices and records are getting linked in and uploaded; data I couldn’t find a few years ago is now available!

I’m going to make a note about the data I have from Mom. Lots of what she told me happened before she was born and was family lore, which was aged for years before she told me. And my memory is not perfect either.

From familysearch.org (LDS), I find a scan of a record of Edwin’s first marriage in June 1899 to Regine Wasserberger in VIenna.

From that doc, I see Edwin’s birthdate is 4/24/1874; his parents are Jakob Bardach and Rosa Hoenigsman. Looks like he was born in Lemberg. Mom had said he was Polish (I assume Galicia) but a Google search of Lemberg shows it’s the German name for Lviv (Ukraine).

There was a lot of interchange between Ukrainian and Polish Jewish populations so Polish could have been his language. He certainly spoke German as well, and I’m going to guess Yiddish. Galicia was divided between the Ukraine and Poland when the Austrian Hungarian Empire was broken up. So... Ukraine? Poland? With borders changing, I’m not sure the label is important.

Mom told me Jakob apparently died when Edwin was young, and Rosa and Edwin then moved to VIenna.

Alice Bardach was born on 5/18/1900 to Edwin and Regine. The data on Alice’s birth certificate (image also from familysearch.org) confirms Edwin’s birthday and birthplace, and lists his occupation as a Privat Beamter. The first link below talks about what that was.

I found the divorce record for Regine and Edwin 3/13/1905, which listed one daughter.  Mom had said there were two daughters.

Mom said Edwin had met an American woman and almost moved to the US with her, but backed out at the last minute; the steamer trunk we had in the garage for so many years was for that trip. I have no idea if this was before he married Regine, or between his marriage to Regine, and Franziska Netousek (die Tante) in 1912.

I didn’t find the divorce record for them, but I know they were divorced... in 1921, Edwin married Sofie Katharina Famfule.

I did find a record of Mom’s birth associated with Edwin but not Trude or Liesel; I didn’t go looking at other sources for them.

Edwin died in 1935; mom said from a heart attack. I didn’t find his death record.

Alice was deported to an extermination camp in 1942, which is where most of the Jews from Vienna were sent. Look up the name of the camp on the internet if this is of interest.

I had found data on a Elsa (Alice) who had died in South America (note that in German, Alice would be pronounced ah-lease-eh). I didn’t save the source and can’t find it again. If I recall correctly, I’d figured she was born earlier than 1900; also, Bardach seems to be a common name. If I find it again, I’ll update this blog post.
